Az 50-es évek végén az irodai alkalmazottként dolgozó Rachel, megismerkedik a gazdag családból származó, tehetséges Philippe-el. Kapcsolatukból egy kislány születik: Chantal. Philippe nem hajlandó a társadalmi ranglétrán alatta álló Rachelt feleségül venni. Rachel egyedül neveli fel a lányát, de hosszas küzdelem után sikerül elérnie, hogy Philippe a nevére vegye a gyereket. A több, mint tíz évig tartó harc nemcsak a saját, de a lánya életét is tönkreteszi.

À la fin des années 50, Rachel, employée de bureau, rencontre Philippe, brillant jeune homme issu d'une famille bourgeoise. De cette liaison naîtra une petite fille, Chantal. Philippe refuse de se marier en dehors de sa classe sociale et Rachel devra élever sa fille seule. Peu importe, Chantal se bat pour qu'à défaut de l'élever, Philippe lui donne son nom. Une bataille de plus de dix ans qui finira par briser sa vie et celle de sa fille.
